Question:
Is sleeping in someone's closet illegal?

Hi, after recently losing my apartment from overdue mortgage payments, I have taken to sleeping wherever I can. I still have one of the spare keys from my apartment and the three buildings all share the same locks, so I started sneaking into apartments during the work day and catching some Z's in their coat closets. I haven't been caught yet, but I'm afraid that I will be arrested if something ever happens. I haven't stolen anything, but I need somewhere to sleep other than the local park benches (one time I was mugged there). Is this illegal?

Yes, that is illegal and although you don't want to live in a homeless shelter, do you really want to live in jail? That's where you are heading if you don't stop your illegal entry of other people's homes. And have you even considered that they may have security features (cameras, alarms, etc.)?

If you are truly homeless, go to the local Salvation Army and ask for help. They seldom turn people away and they may know how to get you into subsidized housing. Good luck and God bless.

Yes, it's illegal. It's unlawful entry, probably even breaking and entering, also trespass. Try calling 211 from a landline for referral to a homeless shelter. The call should be free from a pay phone.

You could also be sued for the upset you cause when someone comes home early and finds you.

Of course, if you are arrested, you might not have to worry about a place to sleep.

Yes, they can tell if you are using their wifi. It shows up on mine when someone unapproved is online.

Lauren, people can access the internet for free at public libraries. You might want to go to one sometime, you could learn a lot. Like that selling a computer, ipod, etc. won't get you enough money to make a mortgage payment.

The closet has a window and can fit a dresser and the crib? on top of toys? Sounds like a mini bedroom to me. There is no issue in this, in fact, when I was looking at one bedrooms when my daughter was only a few months old, I thought about putting her in the walk in closet in the one I almost got. There is nothing wrong with this at all.

Yes it's illegal. You're breaking and entering even if you have a key.

why not rent the places out to local homeless for the night to make extra money, you have the keys after all.
