Question:
Should the Nebraska child abandonment law be changed?

Lawmakers are upset because older children are being abandoned, even though the law was only intended to prevent abandonment of newborns. But is it a bad idea to create a disincentive for people to drop off kids they can't handle? If you are leaving a 10 year old at a fire station because you don't want him, isn't it likely you aren't a fit parent?

You brought up a legitimate point but I think the law will be repealed from necessity. The problem is the law allows you to disavow all responsibility for your kids. I can understand needing help, but you must still be an active participant in the resolution of the problem that you had a big part in creating. Even if the state needs to take custody, the parents should be paying child support of sorts to the state. I also wonder how many of those parents were just using it as a scare tactic on their children? I think that would be a serious misuse of the law, akin to calling 911 to report your cable TV is out. If nothing else, the law may have brought an issue to the forefront that hasn't really been dealt with in the past so it may have still have been a good law if only a temporary one.

All I have to say is, shame on those parents! The law should be changed! What message does this send to the child? It tells them that when the going gets tough, just quit! I agree with the Nebraska governor, these parents are proving they don't love & support their kids.

If I was in charge, I'd take away all parenting rights from these parents! No more claiming your kids on taxes, never be allowed to be a foster parent, never be allowed to adopt, and if you have a kid of your own, the state takes custody until you take parenting classes and are deemed fit to raise another child. Afterall, they may just be parents for the money, and attention from friends.

Honestly, I wonder what these sorry exuses for parents will say when they try to re-connect with their kids years later?!?!..... "Hey no hard feelings about dumping you in Nebraska so I can have an easy life. I need you to support me now that I'm old, and I wanna see my grandkids!"

Hey, that's a great idea. The kids can get revenge later by dumping their parents in the worst nursing homes. Then they'll know how it feels
