I was wondering whether or not i needed a lawyer to represent me in court because a lawsuit was filed against me. My roomate is suing me for unpaid rent. I cant afford to pay for a lawyer so do i have any other options?

You don't need one but you're highly advised to get one. How much is the claim? You'd both be far better off to settle out of court unless you're talking 10s or hundreds of thousands or more.

Many communities have "Legal Aid Societies" which can help you decide whether or not you need an attorney, and if so may be able to help you find one who will represent you "pro bono" [free], or at a reduced rate which you can afford.
If it is determined that you don't need an attorney, then they can advise you on how deal with the issue in court.
However, I should warn you that if you know that you honestly OWE the debt, the chances of getting out of paying your just debt will not be good, attorney or not.

You must go to the County Clerk's Office and file an answer Pro Se. You do not need a lawyer if you are not a Corporation.

Pre-Paid Legal. You can go to court alone. I don't know how much you are being sued for but it is probably small claims court and if he can prove that you owe rent he is probably going to be awarded a judgement.

No you don't need a lawyer - I assume he's suing you in small claims court.
If you owe him the money - recommend you work out a payment plan.

Do you owe the rent? If so buck up and pay her I'll bet she would drop her case and it would undoubtedly be cheaper for you than an attorney.
Shouldn't have left her hanging in the first place.

You don't need one, but it's a really really really really really good idea. "A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client."
