My car was stolen while I was at work and although I reported it straight away and cancelled my cards and cellphone, the thief was still able to run up several thousand dollars worth of debt in my name. They've already proven those identity protection places to be breachable or maybe even downright scams. No one can one hundred percent prevent theft and fraud. Each vender should have done the right thing and verified the identity of that person pretending to be you. When they did the wrong thing they made it possible for this person to get away with it. I don't know what kind of scam they ran...getting a credit card, or using yours. But they shouldn't have been able to do that. The whole point of Id and SSN and all that was meant to avoid identity confusion and account fraud. It's an infringement on privacy rights and a ridiculous expense. And now they aren't being used to your advantage. All the things people claim will protect you will only protect you if everyone involved does the right things.
