is a monotheistic faith and the world's second-largest religion. Islam is considered an Abrahamic religion, along with Christianity and Judaism. Followers of Islam, known as Muslims, believe that God (Allah in Arabic) revealed his divine word directly to humanity through many earlier prophets, and that Muhammad was the final prophet of Islam.

Muslims believe that Muhammed is the last prophet.

Islam is a religion founded by the prophet Muhammad. Muslims beleive that Islam is the true religion of Abraham and Jews and Christians are following an inaccurate and corrupt form of this religion. Muslims have 5 main prophets or messengers (Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, Moses, and Noah) and a myriad of minor prophets.

Muslims have to follow the five pillars of Islam:

Shahadah-The confession that there is no god but God (Allah) and Muhammad is his messenger.

Salat-Regualr, daily prayers (sunrise, noon, midafternoon, sunset, evening) that must be preceded by a ritual washing. The prayers must be done facing Mecca (the birthplace of Muhammed and the first city to fall to Muhammad's army and convert to Islam).

Zakat- Alms giving to the poor

Fasting during the month of Ramadan

Hajj- Pilgramige to Mecca to reinact major events from Abraham's life.

An interesting difference between Islam and Jeudo/Christian beleifs is that Islam teaches that Hagar was Abraham's wife and thus Ishmael was the favored sun whil jews and christians beleive that Rebecca was Abraham's wife and Isaac was the favored son.

There are two main groups of Muslims: Sunni and Shi'i. The Sunni are much larger and the split between the two came about after Muhammad's death when people needed to decide who would succeed him in political and spiritual rule. The Shi'i beleive Ali should be the true successor and the Sunni beleive it should have been Uthman.

We live in one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Given the different backgrounds that we come from, there is a great need for tolerance, understanding and respect for such diversity. Above all, we need to be committed to interfaith dialogue.

What is Islam?

Islam is a religion which guides its followers in every aspect of their lives. It is a way of life.

Islam is the modern or latest version of the message sent by God through Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Islam was sent to mankind through Prophet Muhammad. Islam is "modern" in the sense that it has come to complement the teachings which were introduced through Moses and Jesus.

Islam is a religion which seeks to give a meaningful purpose to our life on this earth. It seeks to guide us in fulfilling that purpose by creating harmony between ourselves, our Creator and fellow human beings.

Islam sometimes seems strange to non-Muslims because it is a religion which impacts every part of life, from eating and sleeping to working and playing. It is not only a personal religion, but also a social one. Muslims seek to live in accordance with God's laws. By doing so, they strive to obtain nearness to God and victory over temporary trials and temptations in this world. All aspects of their practice including prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage are intended to help meet this goal. Although strict by secular standards, Islam is not an ascetic religion. Islam requires its followers to be active participants in their communities. Muslims believe that God is One, indivisible, and they believe in all the prophets of the Christians and Jews including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus (peace be upon them). Muslims also recognize another prophet named Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), who is a direct descendant of Abraham through his first born son, Ishmael. His prophethood may be prophecied in the Bible in several places, including Deut 18:18 and John 14:16. The Qur'an is the holy book of Muslims. It contains many stories that are familiar to Christians and Jews. It was not created by man but was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) through the Angel Gabriel at the command of God. It contains no scientific fallacies or internal contradictions. In fact, it contains much scientific knowledge discovered by scientists only in this century. The Qur'an is an unparalleled Arabic literary masterpiece. Furthermore, it survives in its original revealed form, unlike the Torah and the Gospel.
