I came down with a nasty stomach virus and i had to work tuesday and today. i had called in sick both days because tuesday i was puking my brains out and today i am recovering. i just started eating today and still get dizzy while walking so obviously i am not gonna work an 8 hour shift if i might pass out. one of my friends had an interview at the same place i work and apparently he over heard them talkin about me and that it might be bad. can they fire me for simply calling in sick? i didnt go to the doctors because i knew what it was and medicine cant cure a virus. im starting to get worried because i need this job. cant the union protect me from getting fired for calling in sick? what are my rights for calling in sick? i work part-time btw.

They can fire you for any reason or no reason unless it's discriminatory, or you have a union to protect you.

Wait until you get back and see what happens. If they want to have a meeting, tell them you want a union rep there.

If you have a history of calling in sick a lot, the union may not be able to do anything about it.

Almost all these cowards are kissing your backside in hopes of getting a crumby ten points, instead of telling you the truth. You may or may not have left out important information. If you are not in the habit of calling in sick, you should be fine. However, if you have called in sick before when you just wanted a "mental health day," you could very well be fired. Call in sick when you are sick - especially in a job involving food preparation, it is the right thing to do. But don't call in sick when you are well enough to work. Get yourself out of bed and go to work when you are able to do so.

If you are a new employee still on probation then YES they can fire you without cause.

If you pay union dues then call your Shop Steward and ask him/her this question
