hello, for my English class I'm suppose to write a speech to present to the class on any opinion of my choice, mine was to legalize cannabis, I'm looking for structural advice or improvements that should be made to help improve this paper.

My proposal
For my proposal I would like to propose an idea that can be the solution to most of the problems in the states financially and economically. My proposal is simple and wouldn’t require a lot to give, no one will have to suffer by having something taken away, and my proposal would be to legalize Marijuana. With this idea the economic crisis that were in just might be over if this substance was to be sold legally. Another problem that would be solved due to the legalization of cannabis would be crime rates, they would drop, have less dealers selling, and more space in prisons. With my proposal I would like to ensure that there are more benefits to having Marijuana legal rather than having the substance remain illegal.
The main reason for such a proposal such as this legalization would be because there are a lot of problems in this country that are far worse when compared to cannabis. Things such as rape, murder, stealing, and fraud are crimes that have to be more focused on then someone who inhales marijuana. The substance known as Salvia is far more powerful in terms of its effectiveness compared to cannabis, and yet it’s illegal. Why should Salvia, knowing that’s its more effective, be legal while the substance of Marijuana remains illegal? It doesn’t make sense that it is illegal when it obvious that it should be the other way around where Salvia is illegal and Marijuana isn’t. Having this proposal I want to have viewers and readers, re-consider their thoughts on Marijuana.
Another great outcome from having cannabis legal and able to be purchased by any who want the substance, would be that if legalized it can greatly increase the economy and give back money and make it go around like its suppose to. Marijuana can be taxed making way more money for the government as well, having more money for funds and schools that could use the money as well. Thinking about the more positive things then the negative about marijuana can be easily split because there are far more positives then negatives. A few would be that economy, taxes, funds, prison space, crime rates would be better if the substance were to be legalized.
Based on the positives of what would be a change for the better, as far as the bad comes the good is just as good, the crime rate in California is very high mostly drug related. This doesn’t mean that it’s caused by drugs but sometimes for drugs, such as dealing, stealing, and gang related drug acts. Having cannabis legal would stop most of those because there would be no problems with who has what and the need to steal something that’s already legal. Also drug dealers wouldn’t have what they need to sell if Marijuana was to be legalized. With this in effect it would leave more bad people off the streets and also have less in the prison systems. Hundreds and thousands of people are placed is prison facilities for selling, smoking, or having anything to do with Marijuana.
I believe that there should not be a need for having these people locked up for doing such a small crime for a small substance. If anything we would lose money by feeding and housing them, leaving worse and harder criminals out in the world. If Marijuana is legalized, the prisons would have more room for serious crimes and bad criminals who have committed far worse crimes then inhaling a substance of weed. These reasons are perfect for having Marijuana legal because Cannabis is an over-rated substance that is made a big deal of for no reason. Alcohol and cigarettes kill more people then weed and yet it’s legal with the proper age restriction. If these are legal why shouldn’t Marijuana also be legal?

Yeah it does need quite a bit of work so it flows smoothly and is more compelling, but I suppse youll be reading it out anyway so you may just want to try and rememeber the main points, Id say just keep info grouped together, i.e. crime, economy, and in a good order, anyway, im a uni student in my final year and when I finish I intend to make a documentary on why it should be legalised, it is inhibitory to our freedom, and this isn't opinion or belief, its the truth, here are some more ideas...

- The real reason cannabis was made illegal in the US (late 1930s) and still remains illegal today in the US and UK is because its counter-part, Hemp, is a major threat to major corporations, wood and cotten in particular, as hemp can be used to replace all paper supples and clothing.

In the late 1930s in the US, Ruppert Williams, owner of a newpaper company, began spreading lies about weed through a racist smear campagn, saying that cannabis was plant that black men used to 'corrupt' white women. The propoganda continues to this day, if you watch anti-majuanna adverts by 'Above the Influence', you will see that it doesn't provide information, it simply provides a non-sensical story aimed at youths.

- Last year in the UK and US, over 500,000 died as a result of tobacco, approximately 90,000 as a direct result of alcohol, but no one died as a direct result of cannabis, it is extremely intoxic.

- However its downside if anxiety and paranoia, but this is a result of smoking too much, especcially skunk which is everywhere nowadays, if you wish to be a regular smoker, stay away from skunk as it has 5 times the levels of THC which causes anxiety and paranoia and lower level of CBD which counter this, smoke hash instead which has lower levels of THC and higher levels of CBD.

- If you wish to save the economy, legaise weed, it generates billions every year

- It would also lower crime firstly through all the hundreads of thousands people arrested from growing or possessing weed in the US and UK, but more importantly it would take away the main money source from criminals, billions.

- The cannabis plant has been taken by animals on Earth for over 30,000,000 years, your brain is designed for marijuanna, the cannabanoid receptor in the brain is designed for THC, you as a human, are meant to take marijuanna.

- Cannabis is far more pro-social than alcohol, alcohol causes people to become obnoxious and aggressive leading to such issues as domestic violence, marijuanna induces relaxation and friendliness, it is a culture and a means of meeting new people, and stoners can tell you this from personal experience.

- It is also far more safe to drive on weed than alcohol, alcohol causes drivers to be wreckless and rish-taking, drivers on weed are far more aware of their state and therefore actually drive safer and slower, as studies conducted by the BBC and Top Gear have revealed.

- Political control is also an issue, forget the media, its filed with scare stories and propaganda, one t reason the government and corporations want less people smoking weed is because it induces critical thinking, which is why, along with magic mushrooms, its been argued to have accelerated evolution

- The reason addiction is an issue throughout society is that people arn't properly educated about drugs, ive had to figure and find out everything for myself, the fact is, there is a down side to everything, for example, too much fast food can causes heart problems, drugs are NOT bad, drugs CAN be bad, but they must be taken in reasonable amounts.

- You never hear any positive drugs stories, do you think we would have all the great music we listen to every single day if it wasn't for drugs like weed, would we even know The Beatles now?

- Life is an experience, and it should be peoples freedom to make their personal choices, as long as it does not inhibit the personal choices of others, and drugs are one of these as drugs are not immoral, people simply need to be given information about drugs so they can make their own decisions.

Oregon has recently legalized marijuana for recreational use. Shops devoted to selling it have sprung up all over the state.

The only thing I would have to contribute to the debate is that it would be a lot safer for the public if there were a reliable on-the-spot test to tell if someone was too stoned to drive or otherwise function normally when necessary.

There are already tests for alcohol overuse – we need one for weed too.
