Question:
The American flag.............................A question for Americans only?
2007-06-10 15:34:11 UTC
I recently received a email and it showed some school in California , (95% hispanic) the students had put the Mexican flag on top of the pole , then had put the Stars and Stripes UPSIDEDOWN below the Mexican flag , the email showed them doing it in pictures and was a detailed slide show.
This really chaps my hide , I think there should be severe consquences for this , say 6 months in Jail ,
or kicked out of the country , If Mexico is deemed better in there eyes why dont they just move to Mexico , What do you think?Does it make you angry too .

It is indeed disturbing. Where were the school officials?? This kind of conduct cannot be tolerated. Round 'em up and head south.

Flying the American flag upside down is a common form of protest. It has been done since the Revolutionary War.

While many up-tight rightwingers have tried to make it illegal, it isn't. Here in the U.S., we look at things a little differently. We are patriots but can protest in anyway we want as long as property isn't destroyed or people hurt.

The Flag protocol says that when two countries flags are flown from the same pole, the U.S. flag is alway on the top with the other country below it. Once again, flying the Mexican flag first is a form of protest.

It is quite legal here and I wouldn't have it any other way. It is not a form of disrespect but rather a form of protest.....

We are such a diverse nation. Almost all the people in my country are immigrants or their parents or grandparents were. Just because they have come to America doesn't mean they have to ignore their roots.

FYI: I live in the suburbs of one of the major cities in the northeast. That city is one of neighborhoods where you can drive anytime and see the Italian and American flag, the Irish, the British - basically all nations. People in my country are proud of their roots and where they come from.

Yea, that does really piss me off too. They have no respect for the country. They state should have immediately taken the flag down and put old glory back on top, but in CA who knows what happened. They have pride for their country, and I don't blame them. I'm Polish and Italian, and I have a lot of pride in that, but I would never put those flags above the U.S. flag. It's a bunch of high school kids being punks. I don't think that every single kid at the school that was Hispanic was involved. And even if they cheered, if I saw a Polish flag raised at my high school when I was there, I would have cheered for my heritage.

The students that did this should be punished, but deportation or imprisonment is way too much. I'm not even sure if they broke any state laws (again, especially out in CA), but the school and education system has a responsibility to inform these students why this is so offensive to many Americans, and to punish the kids.

** I just read the article and saw the pictures, and that really does make me sick. I thought it was one or two kids being punks. There was a huge crowd of students helping do this. Absolutely horrible.

** This also happened at the end of March, but I don't remembering seeing anything on it at all, and I watch FOXNews usually.

It is understandable that it chaps your hide. I think 99% of Americans would be upset.

But justice and liberty must be dispassionate. We should acknowledge the freedom of speech for anyone on our soil. Desecration of the American flag should never be punished, ever. It should be protected political speech, a liberty enshrined in the the Bill of Rights.

When those students are older, they will be able to realize this, and they will appreciate the freedoms they enjoyed. Such an act would never be tolerated in Mexico, where civil liberties are more limited.

I have to wonder, where was the teacher as this was taking place?

If this is an American school and it's funded with American taxpayer dollars, the American flag should be flown and not the flags of any other countries.

Total dis-respect for our Flag and Country. You need to call the Board of Education in your County, State. Let them know what is happening and it is their Responsibility to correct that. If they don't then go to the Governor. He is a strong American and he will see to that this is stopped. Yes, this makes me angry and I agree with you 100% Don't let this slip by, do something about it. It is terrible dis-respect to America. God Bless America.

Yes, it makes me angry. Was this on a public school? If so then they have no right to deface the town's/city's property. Was it a private school? If so, then it is not illegal since it is not public property and not against the law.

If I remember correctly it was done by students from another school.

The last I checked, this was still America and it was a political protest. It is called 'free speech'.
