Why is South Dakota such a conservative state, to the extent of adopting such an extreme abortion law?

I know that South Dakota is mainly a Republican state. But what are the other social, religious and political factors that contribute to this extremity?

Because it's their right to do so. There are people that believe life begins at conception. Roe v. Wade was bad law anyway because the Supreme Court usurped the power of the Legislative branch and has at times usurped the states rights to restrict abortion. There is no right to privacy in the constitution.

Plus abortion violates the hippocratic oath that doctors take:

swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfil according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant:

To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art - if they desire to learn it - without fee and covenant; to give a share of precepts and oral instruction and all the other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but no one else.

I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.

I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.

I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work.

Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves.

What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself, holding such things shameful to be spoken about.

If I fulfil this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.

The new law in South Dakota basicly bans almsot all abotions. It is of course in direct conflict with Roe.

they realise that the Federal Distict court will suspend it, but they want it to go to the Supreme Court in the US.

they beleive that first there is no constititional right really to an abotion, it is not really a privacy issue.

They realise that Roe barely passed when it did ( one vote) and now they beleive they can over turn Roe V Wade.

The real problem is that abortion should never been a federal issue, it is a states right issue. the Federal government has taken far to many rights from the states.

( that was the real issues of the civil war, states right)

But if it goes to the supreme court, you will see many more staes doing the same, this is a trial case to see if Roe V Wade can be overturned.

alot of national support went into this passing.

a million. The Rio Grande Valley is a drop contained in the bucket. Texas is massive! 2. The conservatives do no longer have a situation with gays. that's only yet another left wing lie. 3. Dallas isn't all democratic. I stay the following and understand further helpful. quit mendacity and making issues up. 4. The votes in Texas shift decrease back and forth each few election cycles. we are nevertheless usually a conservative dealing with and performing state.. 5. Many hispanics vote conservative. extra are switching on a daily basis as they see what a disaster the left wing quite is.

What is the law? A little more info would help those of us in other states who have no idea what's going on in a place as remote as South Dakota.

Because the majority of the citizens of the state supported it. If you don't like it, you can always move to California.
