As long as you do not collect on your insurance, is it a crime?
I ask because my friends and I were talking about why Elvis' life insurance was never collected on.

It depends on how serious you are about faking your death. There would be no legal issues if you just fell over and said "I'm dead", but if you are trying to destroy your identity it can lead to a ton of legal problems. For example, if you hired someone to crash a plane and claim you were on-board, then the police investigate your death, then that is illegal because you are wasting police time and taxpayer money. If you faked your death to try to collect insurance money, then that is insurance fraud, which is illegal. If you succeed in faking your death, then crete a new ID for yourself, then that is illegal, and if you get caught for using a fake ID and it is discovered that you faked your death, then there will be legal consequences. In short, seriously faking your death can lead to illegal things, but there are no specific laws against the act itself.
Let me end this by adding, like other illegal things, such as murder and embezzlement, the government authorizes the faking of people deaths all the time (Witness Protection Program)

Identity theft is a crime, fraud is a crime, misuse of public services is a crime (using police resources to search for you). If you can fake your own death without breaking these laws, I suppose you can get away with it.
“Elvis did apply for a $1 million life insurance policy in 1976, but he ended up not buying it. Some of the ‘Elvis is alive’ advocates apparently came across records of his application. What they failed to learn, or they have failed to mention, is that Elvis never actually made the purchase. There is no ‘uncashed’ life insurance policy.”

it's a crime because eventually your social security number will be re-assigned to another person. This will cause trouble when or if you come back. You will go to jail but there is a few exceptions for it like if you have been killed before or shot (it's something like that) at two different occasions it is allowed. Your idenity can be changed (social security number) to a different number with a different name but they are NOT going to give you a death certificate! If you fake your death and hide for 7 years or more I believe that it's not illegal anymore because you are classified as a dead citizen! LOL your social security number is you basically just like when you go to jail and they give you those numbers on your back! If you run away from jail you can remove the suit but you are still theat number! You change your social security number but you are still that person! I wanted to fake my death before so I got all the specifics, but I was only like 10 so WTF would the purpose be? LOL

Yes, the government will have to register the fact, the police might waste their time.
