Write to the state's bar association. Send it certified to make sure that there is no excuse that they didn't get it. They will usually try to protect the lawyer unless he's had a lot of complaints. They will drag it out too. I watched a friend go through this after some lawyer botched their case. What a hassle.

The bar association does not discipline lawyers. The bar association is a voluntary association of lawyers, similar to any other fraternal organization. You should look up your state's supreme court and then look for disciplinary commission on that website. If they do not have it there, search for attorney registration and discipline commission in your state. If you tell us what state you are in, I will give you a link.

Here is the link for Michigan:

Write to the (State) Bar Association in your state's capitol. Any post office should be able to give you a proper address. If not, check with the DA's office in your county seat for an address. Or better yet, first get the phone number (area code+555-1212 for info). Call them and explain you have a complaint. They will send you a form to fill out outlining your grievance. This will provide a faster response than a handwritten letter.

Depends on where you are. In some states, the "mandatory bar" states (such as New Mexico), you complain to the State Bar Association.

In other states, such as New York, you complain to an office of the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, known as the Departmental Disciplinary Committee.
