Question:
How would I go about getting emancipated? I'm 17, in the Army Reserve, in Alabama & I'm going to Job Corps.?

I'm 17 years old, I live in Selma, Alabama and I enlisted in the Army Reserve two weeks ago. I'm currently a senior in high school but I'm going to Job Corps in Montgomery in a week or two. I want to get emancipated because I see no reason for my dad to control me when he's not going to be supporting me in any way, shape, or form. I'm going to be getting a check from the Reserve when I start drilling in Livingston once a month, and I'll also get a small check from Job Corps, which I'll use to pay for my phone. The rest of my money will most likely just sit in the bank because I don't really care that much about money. I want to know if it would be even possible for me to get emancipated because someone told me that my dad would have to sign for that to happen. But by the time I finish Job Corps I'll be going to Basic Combat Training & AIT School in South Carolina. I'll be 18 by the time I return. How do I go about getting emancipated? I just think its unnecessary for me to be on lock-down when my dad is not doing anything for me. Because he made it so that I can't go anywhere when I go to Job Corps at all . I'm a teenager. I need freedom while I can, and I'm NOT a trouble-maker.

Age of majority is 19 in Alabama and you have to be 18 before you can file for emancipation>> http://www.youthrights.net/index.php?title=Alabama_Emancipation_Law . Yes your dad (and possibly mom, but you don't mention her) will have to sign off on it. You will have to prove you can support yourself and live completely on your own, handle all affairs and stay in school (Job Corps should count as that). You also have to pay for your own lawyer and that could run into $1000.00 or more and take a year or longer to go through the courts. Will you be earning enough from the reserves and Job Corps to do all this?

"If" your state has a statute for process it "will" require you prove you are "self" supporting and you have a plan for independent living as continued education. "If your state has no statute for process it isn't going to happen

You do realize the military won't take you without a high school diploma don't you?

You ca oly get emancipated, if you can prove you can support yourself. No job, no emancipation. That reserve check isn't going to support you.

youre too old to even begin the process of being emancipated even if you start the process tomorrow, it will take longer for them to process your papers and see you in court than for you to leagally be an adult when you turn 18.. on top of that you really dont have a good reason. and yes, your father would have to sign the papers.

freedom isnt a right when you are a minor, you father legally can keep you from a job and if thats the only reason for you to get emancipated the judge wont grant it.

Are you aware that if you get yourself emancipated - you will have to provide your own food, housing and clothing?

Based on your question - I suspect that you are not anywhere near being mature enough to live on your own.

that first answer is only partly correct. you can join the army without a diploma. i joined at 17 my junior year of high school. i just had to have a letter from the school stating i was in good standing and on track to graduate on time. if you do not graduate then they will either help you get a GED or boot you out.

As for an emancipation, at least in California last time i checked you don't need your dads permission but it would make it a lot easier, but hot wheels is right, you would probably be 18 anyway before the paperwork made it through the system.
