"A Somali man has been charged with trying to murder a Danish artist whose cartoons of the prophet Muhammad sparked a storm of protest and violence across the Muslim world."

It's hardly a surprise though is it?

Salman Rushdie lived in fear of being murdered for years because of a book he wrote.

Geert Wilders will need security guards for the rest of his life because of a film he made.

Theo Van Gogh was brutally slaughtered because of his film "Submission."

The "religion of peace" has no place in civilised societies.

No of course not, and the man will be charged, but that is not really the point. The newspaper was being deliberately provocative in publishing the drawings and it all came out of the idea that Muslims living in a non Muslim country should somehow be 'tested' by the flaunting of the taboo about pictorial representations being made of the prophet Muhammad. It all kicked off because a Danish writer wrote a book for children about Islam and the life of Muhammad and he reportedly had trouble finding an illustrator who would do the pictorial representations he wanted and finally one did it anonymously. Now if you're writing a book about Islam it seems a bit silly not to put the idea across that Muslims don't make drawings of Muhammad, there have been some in old minatures but his face is left blank, and another children's book has been published recently in which he is shown as a golden silouette which is more appropriate. The newspaper ran the story about it that the illustrators shouldn't have felt intimidated and self-censored, and in defiance commissioned all their cartoonists to make drawings of Muhammad.

Never.

Bad shots those Danes though. Should have been a quick couple to the body, then one to the head.

Remember what all the fuss was about in the first place?

Simple Q to answer.

No.

Not if you believe in freedom of expression, sadly many from third world countries don't.

Their views as to what is and what isn't acceptable can be very different to ours, they don't see the need for principles such as Equality, Liberty, Freedom, Democracy, to many especially the males these are alien concepts that have little or no bearing on their lives.

Not under the laws of any liberal democracy. But nations can make their own laws. You would not want them to impose their laws on us, nor should we impose ours on them. But when a person goes to another country and violates their laws, he should be punished. I hope the Somali is tried under Danish law and convicted of this crime.

No. That's an overreaction of the worst kind. Haven't these fundamentalist idiots got anything better to do with their time?

At least one liberal on here believes so, saying that drawing the cartoon is the same as kicking a hornet's nest and that essentially the artist got (or will get with a successful murder attempt) what he deserves.

Many do not think he was even trying to draw the Prophet. It didn't look one bit like him. Many who have seen previous portraits of him say so.

if only he'd known that islam forbids depictions of the prophet mohamed, all this mess could have been avoided, if you want respect, then you should show respect!

"dylan, he is not a Muslim, does not live under Islamic law, does not live in a Muslim country.",

did i say otherwise, i did say "respect"!
