This is all therectical, I would never condone breaking traffic laws or do anything like this myself. But I suspect this may be what the people you see speeding are doing.
The main thing to remember when driving is to remember that avoiding tickets is a numbers game. The more cars on the road the less the likelyhood of getting a ticket if you follow a few simple rules.
On a deserted road at night, drive close to the speed limit. You probably won't see them before they see you. In daylight it's a whole different ball game. Most of these rules apply to control acess highways which are designed for safe travel at far beyond the posted speed limits. Most accidents happen on secondary roads and they should be driven with caution and care.
As Sun So (sp) once said, "if you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the results of 1000 battles. " If you're traveling the same areas, get familiar with the techniques and vehicles the police are using.
Speed is usually clocked by radar, vascar, pacing, laser (lidar), and aircraft. The bottom line is that they have to see you to measure your speed, with a few tips you can make yourself almost invisible to them.
Most interstates now have barrier fences to prevent head on collisions. These also prevent for the most part police from turning around in the median after clocking a car. This was one of the toughest clocking situations to spot before it was too late due to the high closing speeds with the officer. There are still places where no fences are present and this danger still exists. Watch for cars that are grouped together. This can mean that one of the cars is a police car. On the interstate, be wary of interchanges. Vehicles entering pose a danger anyway but police like to sit on entrance ramps and clock motorists as they pass. This is popular when using vascar, which is a timing system. As you pass under or over a bridge check the ramp for parked vehicles that could be police.
Another tactic is to run radar or laser in the median or side of the road. If you do two things these will not be a problem. Number one pay attention. If you pass a stopped patrol car while speeding and get a ticket, you deserved it.
The second thing is to let others get the ticket for you. Drive on their license. When you're driving it doesnt take long for someone to whiz by you well above the limit. When this happens get some distance back and follow at the same speed. These folks usually stay in the left lane so stay in the right lane, only use the left to pass and made gradual lane changes with proper signaling. This method is called screening. Should you and your new friend encounter an officer, your friend will be clocked first. You can let off the gas and innocently cruise by. You still have to pay attention just in case. You can't let your guard down. When in a screen position, your greatest threat is police that might overtake you from behind. Keep an eye on the rearview mirror and if you see something suspicious let off the gas, dont tap the brake it will give you away.
If you think you've encountered an officer clocking your speed and he is going to stop you there are a few things you can still do that might help.
1 Don't make eye contact. This can imply guilt.
2 Don't use your brakes. This can also impy guilt. If your car has a manual transmission you can gear down to slow it with out giving yourself away or just let off the gas if its an automatic.
3 Know what traffic is doing around you. Move to the slowest travel lane, which is usually the far right. If you see a car the resembles yours in front or behind you, get ahead of it and slow down so they change lanes and pass you. You might get lucky and the officer mistake the two cars. Contrary to postings on here police officers are not infalable. Also if you were wearing a hat when clocked take it off and vice versa.
4 Don't do anything to make your car look out of the ordinary, bumpers stickers, flames, fancy rims, tinting etc. make your car stand out. Even the honoray sheriff decal in the back window needs to go. Officers tend to look at the car and not the tag until they are behind it so you may not be recognized if you blend in.
5 Radar dectectors, CB's, and other gimmicks are only effective in the hands of an attentive driver. A radar or laser detector is only good if it goes off clocking someone besides you. If it's you, it too late and you weren't paying attention. CB radio is notoriously unreliable as "smokey reports" over a few minutes old are obsolete. Quick visual identification and attentive driving is your best defense, the police have more than enough less attentive people they can ticket. Good luck and drive safely
