Question:
The neighbor's car alarm just won't stop going off?

This person's car alarm is horrendous. I live in an urban area and anytime a car passes on the street this person's car alarm is set off. Sometimes they will acknowledge it right away but other times it will just beep throughout the day (or night). What can I do within the bounds of the law to get this to stop?

*I posted this question yesterday and got responses saying I should talk with the person. I would like to refine my question now because I live in a congested city area and it is a random person that I don't know nor do I ever see. They park their car on the street near my house and that is as close to being neighbors as we come. I've never actually seen the person and generally just hear the car so I can't even tell you the make and model.

You can leave them a (polite) note on their windshield, asking them to either keep the alarm off, or parking elsewhere.

If that fails, and the alarm goes off for hours on end, call a tow truck.

Check your city noise ordinances to see the guidelines on time of day and length requirements for violations. Quite a few cities have specific ordinances for car alarms. Then call the city police non-emergency number and report the violations. They'll probably get one warning, but after the cops beat on their door and hand them a ticket, (or two, if they're slow) they'll cut it out. The fines are actually pretty steep. After three unpaid tickets, they'll impound the car and you'll get a good night's sleep. Good luck.

BTW, I don't recommend calling for a tow yourself. It gives that person a potential way to identify you, which could be dangerous. Plus, s/he might sue you for the tow charges. Even if you win, it's still a hassle.

Talk to your neighbor first since you will remain neighbor for a while, whether on good terms or otherwise. If he refuses to do anything, call the local police and see if there is some local city ordinance regarding noise pollution and nuisance. They should be able to help you.

If it's a regular nuisance, you might be able to have it towed.

The cheap, but slightly illegal, solution is to pop the hood and disconnect the battery
