Question:
can grandparents request a copy of birth certificate?

i would like to request a copy of my grandchild's birth certificate, this sounds strange but am not sure my son's name is on there as the father and would like to check. can this be done without the permission of the mother? or do we have to gain a court order to do this? they have an off and on relationship and I would like to know for peace of mind if they split up that my son has custodial rights.

All you have to do is apply to the Registrar in the area where the child was born giving date of birth. You don't need the Mother's permission. It only costs a few pounds. If you don't want the actual birth certificate you can just ask to see the records.

If your grand child was born in this country you can get a copy of the birth certificate without asking anyone, just go online to the general register office,a copy costs about £9.35p you need the date of birth, name of the child and the area they were born in,and they will send you a copy, their phone number is-03001231837, i have obtained a few of my family certificates that way as i am doing family history, they take about 3 weeks to come to you once you order them,i do it online and find it quite easy to do,make sure you go to the right web site though, other sites may offer you the service but they are more expensive.

it is a public record, all you need to do is go to your local registrar, that is assuming the child was born in your town and give the name of the mother and father and date the child was born on

last time I got mine it cost me £7

as I said when I got mine they never asked who I was or why I wanted it I could of been anyone as far as the registrar knew

You can try ordering one from your state vital records department; but I don't believe they will release it to you without a court order. New confidentiality and identity theft protection rules. Your SON can of course do it. If he chooses not to, I'd assume it's his business and go forward on that assumption.

EDIT: an employer may ask YOU for a copy of your birth certificate; they aren't ordering them from the state. Big difference between providing a copy voluntarily and trying to get one without written permission.

you can surely ask but i really dont think they will just give a BC out to anyone...

plus, whether he is on the BC or not doesnt really matter, if he proves he is the father through DNA testing, then he has all the proof he needs to gain custodial rights.

You can ASK anything you wish. Local law will determine your answer.

Even employers can ask for these documents so I am sure you will not have a problem.
