Question:
Is it illegal to print fake money for my own movie?
2011-12-16 21:13:02 UTC
So I have a briefcase and I want to make it look like it is full of cash for a scene in my homemade movie, but is printing fake money that says "NOT LEGAL TENDER" on it illegal? I want fake money that looks close to the real thing without breaking the law. What can I do? How can I make fake money without breaking the law in any way? What makes it a federal offense? Thanks!

Printing anything close is illegal. Merely writing "not legal tender on it" means you'll end up in jail. Which is why novelty money is purposely made much larger.

The government doesn't have to catch you trying to pass it to arrest you. Why? Because this is the go to response of every kid they catch with a color copier doing this.

Make your fake money the right color, nobody will notice that the rest doesn't match.

I guess you want to throw a lot of it around. Just take generic sheets of paper with roughly the right colors, but without any numbers printed on it. Or letters instead of numbers. That way it will look like real money from a certain distance but no-one could mistake it for real money.

There is nothing wrong with that, it might as well be monopoly money. Have you considered using toy money, it will look more realistic being green and all. You could also fill it with ones or even reams of paper and only have the top layer be large bills like $20's. I bet that would only take $200-300 dollars that you can get back.

It's not illegal if you don't try to pass it as real money. As long as you make sure it looks fake you'll be fine.

If you print not legal tender on it you should be fine. Make sure to dispose of it afterwards so no one could get a hold of it. I wouldn't be too worried.

It's only illegal if you intend to use it to exchange for good and services.

Put $100 bills on top and put $1 on the bottom for the rest of the money.
