yes it is possible. the phone company might not know it. it could be a computer generated software tied up on your line that would record calls coming in and going out. i have a software but it is installed on my cellphone that could monitor all calls that i do and i receive. the thing that you can hear is a small click at the beginning of the conversation. and i know even though you would call the phone company, they would not be able to trace it. it would be best if she just change her phone number for security purposes.

The beeping/clicking could be a variety of things.
1. Portable phone. Try changing frequencies. Remember, they have an antenna and pick up signals, even "clicking" from general house electricity.
2. The particular system that generates your dial tone. Sometimes the "cards" (channel units) go bad.
3. Is this a recent installation? Sometimes the outside lines haven't been disconnected where they worked before. A phone repairman can figure that out.
4. Is there easy access to your Network Interface Device (phone box, usually outside)? Someone could plug in there.
5. Are there any "electric fences" nearby? The kind used to keep horses in? They generate a "click" which can be picked up.
My guess is that you're not being tapped. A phone company tech. should be able to help out.

First of all it is illegal to record or tap into someone's phone line without a legal ok from a justice of the peace(Judge) they are the only one's allowed to give such an order. Now it does not mean someone could have bought which you can find on the internet devices that can tap or record a phone line when once picked up. There are also devices that can be bought to scan your lines for such listening devices. You best bet is to have the phone company look into the lines there could be a break in the line that is making that clicking sound and is the most likely situation, not to mention yes someone can pick up a second line in the house but I am assuming its the line they can test it and tell you.

Yes it is possible. But there is no need of ordinary tape recorder the latest technology has solve the problem and mini recorder can also be attached to telephone devices.
How to find if someone is listening or recording?
Keep talking over phone as usual, let the other person disconnect the phone first you keep listening, if you hear any sound, click or beep then it confirms something is going wrong. But another possibility which I can think is some problem in lines.

You can't know for sure. There are some devices that don't tie in to the wiring anywhere. Radio Shack sells one that's simply a suction cup which attaches to your handset near the receiver, and you plug it into your tape recorder, computer or other submini jack.
If it IS a device that's plugged directly into the line, the "clicks" that are heard are because of the voltage changing on the phone line.
Federally approved devices for monitoring and/or recording phone conversations used to be required to generate a tone every 15-20 seconds to let you know you were being recorded.
Under most state laws now, as long as at least one party to the conversation is aware of the phone conversation being recorded, it's legal.

OK there are ways or telling if your phone is tapped:
One way to find out is to time how quickly the signal from your handset takes to get to the other handset, test buy phoning your mobile or if in an office phoning another handset, if there is a delay then normally this indicates that there is a device on the line, the electronics on the device don't operate as fast as phone electronics, cause its having to monitor and record at the same time. try talking and listening how long your voice takes to get to the other handset.
or
the more devices plugged onto a Phoneline the poorer the signal, the phoneline only pumps about 5V, so it will degrade with more phones, so if the transmission is poor quality to the person your talking to (Except long distance), then it is likely that your phone is being tapped.

I don't know if this holds true today, but there used to be a special requirement for legitimate phone call recording devices. I'm referring to ones used by reporters or insurance adjusters or other lawful entities who need to record business conversations.
Every 15 seconds or so, a legitimate phone recorder is supposed to issue a beeping tone, mostly to remind both parties that the conversation is being taped. The only exceptions to that rule were government agencies working under some form of legal warrant. If you listen to tapes of legitimate phone conversations, you'll often hear this beep in the background.

yup
'clicks' give it away usually.
it means the phone had to disconnect for a split second.
usually to re-attach something and the chat continues ...
or
some1 is just eavesdroppnig on another phone(uh oh - hubby again?) You can tell if U hang up quick then pick it back up fast - you might hear the other end drop shortly after u dropped the call.
or
it can be a flash hook - but that means the other end is connecting to another caller .... u hear silence until your receive party returns.
FYI - Legally, legit phone recording devices have to produce a regular tone(beeps) for recorder while its on N the call i sup. Also the other party legally needs to ask ur permission b4 they can connect a legit recorder.
Remember, usually they cannot use this in court without ur expressed approval for use with the call ... unless u belong to a nearby Al Quaida terrorist cell.

I was in summer camp with a telephone lineman, he said this is very common, taping and recording. He said there are two ways to be sure, one is the 'clicking' you are hearing is a surge in the line. One way to be sure is to do a voltage test, phones run on very low voltage, and a recording device, or monitoring device sends a current to the source. Which would result in a slighlty higher voltage. If you are not savy doing a voltage test, call the phone company and ask to speak to a lineman. Ask him unoffically if he would check for a little sumpin-sumpin on the side. It may seem forward, but my friend at summer camp said many of his fellow lineman made money on the side searching these things out. He said many were pretty complex. (also, getting away from a controlling, suspicious partner may be easier)

someone in her house could have installed an automatic recording device (such as husband checking up on her etc.)
I am familiar with one of these machines. It can make noise and is designed to record incoming and outgoing calls. Once it is set up it does this automatically. There is no need for someone to physically be there to do the recording.
You need to check every phone, jack & answering machine (anything connected to the phone line) in your house. Follow the wiring. It must lead to this recording device. It may even be hooked up at the source coming into your home (inside circuit breaker cabinet) or possibly in your garage. It will be located in a place that the person can retrieve the recordings without you noticing.

For the most part you cannot tell unless the person recording you doesn't know what they are doing. I worked for a financial company at one time where we recorded all calls on certain phones. There was nothing you could hear or detect when the recorders turned on, and we used cheap analog radio shack stuff.
If the recorder is placed in your home and you find it that's about the closest you'll come to finding out. If your phone line goes over a digital line for all practical purposes you will be unable to detect a phone tap.

Does sound like a phone tap to me. Maybe it's the hubby, maybe it's Homeland Security. Yes, not only is it possible--a 12 yr old w/ a hobby in electronics can do it.
There is a gadget you can put on phone that can detect a phone tap. Best place I'd say to find it would be at a Radio Shack or any electric home security/surveilance business (and yes, they ARE out there). Search the Yellow Pages. Good luck.
If you fail in this mission the COMPANY will disavow any knowlege of your employment or existance. This tape will self destruct in five seconds....four....three....two....

Fact :if its a government agency you will not be able to tell, if its a privet eye doing illegal tap many ways to tell, clicks, a double Dial tone when dialing out, home depot sells a tool that lets you know if some other line is in use, but need not to worrier cause many times its a squirrel that has eaten through a line or a rat, and this will cause many of the same symptoms, if you suspect it is don't use the phone company use a privet agency to do this and the Will check your system out,

http://www.answers.com/topic/wiretapping
It is illegal in most states to tape with out notifying the other party which is why when you call call centers they say "this call may be recorded" etc. It will not be admited to court if you are in a state where this law is. You would be able to have it struck down if that is the case. It is also illegal to wiretap a phone in general without a judges order. See link above.
There are many bugging methods and with the state of technology today it is highly unlikely that you will hear clicking like in the old days on your phone. Likely you would never know.
If she is really concerned I would advise hiring a privet investigator who is knowledgable in this area to do a walk through of her home for her. He could check this out.
If it is her husband and they have this level of nonexistant trust I would actually just get out of the relationship asap.

Lucid sounds close enough although this type of tap may not be monitored by the phone company.
It is alleged that the phone company has an automated sensing unit that when it senses an 'illegal or legal tap' on your phone line, it should alert you by emitting a 'beep' every 30 to 60 seconds.
Other indicators would be a very hollow reception, which will be extremely 'quiet.' Jose

I have tapped my phone before. There has to be a tape recording device hooked up somewhere in the house. Tell her check all the phone jacks because it has to be hooked up to the phone line that she is taking the calls on and it is probably voice activated! And no matter what no one says it can be done without your permission. I went to Radio Shack and bought everything and had been using it to record my hubby cheating for almost a year! And when I did comfront him he couldn't say anything!

Here's an interesting little fact... If you have a cordless phone, and now a days most people do. a scanner that picks up radio waves (usually people use them to listen to police conversations as a hobby) Can pick up your conversations that you have, also the same applies to cell phones and baby monitors as well. So if you are talking about something private near your baby's room beware.
when a scanner is used you cant tell that people are listening in. Hope I didn't make you too paranoid. : )

We had loud buzzing noise on our line in our new house, back when we had a telephone modem. The phone company came out and checked the connection box on the back of the house and brought back a tiny ear-bud and wire. Someone had attached it to the phone connection to listen to calls and just curled it up into the box.
Unfortunately, the wires INSIDE the house are yours. The phone company will inspect them, but you have to pay for the service call.

It is possible. When you pick up the phone and a beeping sound starts is an indicator. Call your phone company, check all of your phones, and if they say there is not a problem with the line ask them to send someone out to inspect your outside equipment, because if it doesn't stop you will go to another phone company. They will help you find out.

Yup. Sounds like the phone's tapped. Mine used to be, because I lived right above a strip club. It sounds like someone's picking up the phone or something. I thought it was me being paranoid, but after I moved out the sound stopped. Sometimes I'd hear my own voice faintly in the background, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Yes, it is very possible. A friend of mine was being investigated for a crime (which he did NOT commit, btw), but during this 3 month period, every time he called me or I called him, there was in fact a clicking sound on the line. This never happened when I was on the phone with anyone else. Also, this never happened when he called me from anywhere but his own home.

Yes! it's possible even if he's a jealous, and nosy Husband...what you could do is call up the phone company and ask some questions....she is her Husband they wont resist that....Or just open the phone and check for any thing out of the ordinary. (Second) if you're on one of them cheep phone people around your neighborhood can listen in on you. I used to here my neighbors when i pick up my phone too. Good Luck

Ways to tell.... you notice a white van everywhere you go. You see the same strangers over and over again. But easiet way to tell is call your friend, pretend to be her false lover, arrange a meeting somewhere like a car park, invite all your friends, hide them. When friend arrives embrace her, husband will pop out from somewhere, shout AHA! Caught YOU.... at which point everyone else appears and shouts- YOU'RE an UNTRUSTING IDIOT dude. Friend now knows phone is tapped.

First of all, this is perfectly legal. In Delaware, for instance, only one person in a conversation needs to have knowledge of the recording (and that can be the person doing the recording!). The bottom line is.... unless you have absolute trust in the person you're talking to, use caution (in regards to what you say). As far as knowing that the conversation is being recorded, I don't believe there is any tell-tale sign for determining this.
TellMeMore
2006-04-03 09:45:44 UTC
It can be done, however, it may not be admissible in a court of law. It depends on the state, varying states have varying laws about this. Some states require the "taper" to inform the person/people being taped prior to the start of the conversation, and in other states that's not required.

if someone were to tap your phone line you wouldn't know
it. devices used for tapping a line don't give off any indication. it is more likely a bad connection or telephone instrument. being a telephone man since 1968 the only taps i have ever seen are test monitoring by a qualified technician. unless you are in a strange or illegal situation i have found it is more a case of paranoia.

If you think a husband is listening, she should make comments about how she's always wanted to invite another woman into bed. She shouldn't ever mention it to the husband, and just see if it drives him crazy enough to ask about it. haha that would be great.
