Question:
Reporting scam emails?
2008-06-25 17:52:51 UTC
I keep getting emails from supposed bankers, lawyers, "deceased" parties trying to tell me they want to give me millions of dollars just because - along with my personal information.

I just checked my email and there is a message from someone who claims to be dying of cancer and wants to donate 10.5 mil to me under the good graces of God. They even gave me a phone number that I was able to trace to Las Vegas NV. I live in norther Colorado - call it cow town USA. There is no way this "offer" is real and it irritates me to no end to know the depravity some people will stoop to in order to steal someone's identity and pilfer their bank accounts.

Now that I have vented my fraustrations I would like to know who are the proper authorities I need to contact inorder to report these kinds of scams. I know the ones that come from over seas are pretty much untouchable but this email came from someone here in the USA. I want to do my part to see them stopped.

The only thing you can do is report the sender of the email to their ISP (Internet Service Provider). However that only works when the email isn't sent out by a spambot (someone's compromised computer doing the spammers dirty work for them) plus takes work on your part and considering that 90% + of all email is UBE (unsolicited bulk email) you'd be spending a lot of your time with very little reward.

Best thing we can all do to stop scam email is to wise up and not fall for it. If no one falls for them, they will stop coming.
